Doctor Who

I know it's supposed to be a Final Fantasy forum, but we're 3 episodes into the new series and I KNOW there are Doctor Who fans here.

So, basically, how are we all liking the new series? Does Matt Smith measure up to David Tennant? Is he a good fit, or is it too early to tell?

I think Tennant became bigger than the role he played, and so it's not really a fair comparison against Matt Smith. Although having said that, I do like Smith more than I thought I would have, and his 'Gironimo!' 'ctachphrase' is less annoying than I'd anticipated.

Still kind of retarded when he tries to emulate Tennant's particular style, to a certain extent I suppose that is warranted considering half the Who fandom just want to see a Tennant replacement and the usual clichés. Not that I'm criticising, I freaking love it.

On a different note, I'm already starting to prefer Moffat's writing style to Davies'. Seriously looking forward to the weeping angels episode next week, the original was possibly Moffat's best contribution of the last series and so long as this one has as much quality it should be damn good.

It looks like the Daleks have merged with a pack of skittles though.

Smith seems to be a bit more quiet, yet more ruthless than Tennant's Doctor, especially when he met the Daleks in the last episode. He went to town on that first one, Tennant never did that. I do agree that he should find his own style and just run with it, but it's difficult to come up with a completely new persona for The Doctor now that he's in his 11th incarnation. A lot of the things being done now have probably been done before.

The Weeping Angels scared the crap out of me the first time, though the time paradox/loop plot made my head hurt. I love sci-fi, but time travel can make my head hurt like mad!

When the white one came out, I instantly went "Holy crap, it's an Imperial Dalek!", then I half expected a number of black coloured ones to come out. Not too sure about the Super Sentai Daleks yet. They certainly sound menacing and the shape redesign isn't half bad, but the colours just seem off.

Oh dudes...spoiler alert puleeze

XD

The first episode aired here last Sunday, and I was pretty chuffed with it. Loving Matt Smith as the Doctor already and that essentially Amy is just a glorified stripper. The whole "is this world protected" flashback/hologram scene I felt was pretty well done and I've always enjoyed Moffat's writing over Davies' - point in fact the eps in the library were pure awesome.

Sorry Aether, we'll do it next time. And yes, Amy is definitely a Ms Fanservice, though there's less focus on her legs in episodes to come.

I to this day wonder why people rave on about Tennant. Eccleston was better. But Troughton was better than that. But my favorite is the widely underrated McCoy. He was wacky fun-Doctor for real, not screaming, yelling technobabble-Tennant, not exactly helped by the usually terrible writing by first draft-Davies (yes, he did do a few good ones, the first series in particular). Too much tounge-acting, me thinks. And too much Rose. She's gone, okay. She went to a place of no return. Yet, she returns. Again. And again. And again.

But Smith is climbing the list quite quickly over favorites. He might get to top it. I like him. And his companion is just adorable.

And regards to next episode: "Stop saying I'm in Hull!" Oh yeah!

Looking forward to seeing how those creatures will be scary again. If anyone can pull it off, Moffat can.

I also secretly want Hugh Laurie to return to England and be the doc. Or Rowan Atkinson to return to the role (see Moffat's parody episode Doctor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death). That parody also featured Richard Grand, Jimmy Broadbent, Hugh Grant and Joanna Lumley as the doctor.

Tennant had more time to endear himself to the public, I think. He was also good at balancing the scary bits with the comedy bits (in my opinion, anyway). Compared to the very dark, and at times ruthless and violent, Chris Eccleston Doctor he was a more likable and more fun character. I liked Eccleston, for one. I think he should have stayed on for another season. I even started copying his catchphrase.

I've only watched the new-Who, so I can't really compare the new characters to the old characters. Though, if it helps, I've gone through extensive wiki-ing of all the previous Doctors, reading about their accomplishments and episodes of note. :p

I'm liking Amy Pond, but what I don't like is the fact that the companions keep falling in love with him! I loved it when, in Tennant's third season, The Doctor told Donna that he just wanted a friend. "FINALLY!" I thought.

I actually saw that episode on YouTube. Richard Grant should definitely be allowed to take on the role. Out of the four actors in that episode his 2 minute bit was the best (in mu opinion). The downside to giving Rowan Atkinson the role raises too many audience expectations, in my opinion. Though it would be pretty sweet to see him take those expectations and subvert them hard.

If you don't want to see companions in love with the good doc, you definetly should watch the old series. That never happened. But other than that I generally agree with you about the new docs. But Tennant was a bit too much for my liking. He should've had a bit more dark episodes. Just watch the last bit before he regenerated and he went power mad, and good God it was good.

And how about The Master? Who's your favorite? Mine's Sir Derek Jacobi, even if he only did that one episode. He's a really good actor. The way he went from the innocent professor to the maniac master. I splurged.

Edit:

I was sceptical at a new Weeping Angels-episode, as the first was so good, and thought it would never work again. But. Oh. My. Friggin. God. I now know the full meaning behind the "hiding behind the couch"-expression. Nearly got meself brown undies, me.

And this is brilliant: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dHkbdMYpSA

It's just a bit annoying, really. Can't we just have at least some companions who don't immediately become infatuated with The Doc? At least it's somewhat justified with Amy, as she met him when she was a child.

I've only see John Simm, Derek Jacobi and Jonathan Pryce ("I'm not camp! These are Dalek control bumps!"). It's really a toss up between Simm and Jacobi. Simm was more manic and over the top, while Jacobi just seemed to radiate pure evil.

EDIT: And I think a lot of my Tennant fanboyism comes from his coat alone. I'm a sucker for characters with long coats.

Wingly, that link is GENIUS. Some seriously good editing.

That weeping angels episode has just reinforced it. Not only is Moffat a far better writer, but Smith is a far better Doctor than Tennant. I'm another with a soft spot for Amy Pond too.

Everybody was sceptical about the Weeping Angels returning, but by god did Moffat deliver. I wouldn't go so far as to say Smith is better than Tennant just yet.. he's certainly grown on me very fast and he is genius, but hasn't had enough time to develop his character as deeply as Tennant did.

That said, Amy Pond is definitely one of the better assistants. And to be honest, the whole 'assistant falls in love with the Doctor' thing is pretty much unavoidable.. he's a time travelling saviour of the human race and has great hair. Come on

Can't wait for the second part.

Shhhhhh!

I'm just happy next week I get to see British Daleks. Who else but Winston Churchill would be that stupid?

Churchill was a heroic man. He won the war, didn't he? But those Daleks are great.
