A monster arena lies off to the side of the Calm Lands, wherein you can battle monsters that you've caught and gain rare items. Sometimes the arena owner "breeds" a new type of monster: a bigger, stronger and much harder monster than normal. In short, the battle arena is a grea tdeal of fun, but has a tendency to be tough too.

Rare Monster List

Tonberry (Not Master Tonberry) - The Tonberry can be found in the Cavern of the Stolen Faith (or "Sunken Cave", as it's called in the Monster Arena). It is extremely rare, so be prepared and make sure your characters are wielding their Capture weapons. Sometimes, it appears at the screen just before you get Yojimbo, near the teleporter. Keep in mind that, again, it is very rare. If you can't find it, keep looking!

New tonberry trick, submitted by [email protected]:

I found an area quite easy to encounter them; got 9 of them within 1 and 1/2 hrs. The area's location is described as followed: turned right at the first turn, continue going straight till the 2nd intersection and turn right. walk along the path till you enter a dead end where a treasure chest can be found on the left hand side, there are spirits flying at both left and right of the main screen. head to the end of the area you should see yourself entering a rectangular area which is not shown on the mini map. this is the area i found quite easy to encounter tonberries. i then use analog stick and make myself circleing in that area till i encounter monsters. i also fleed all other monsters i've encoutered. i hope this info can be useful for everyone who has problem finding those bloody tonberries :)

Quactar - This rare monster appears at the Thunder Plains, only after you've finished the Cactuar Stone Sidequest. If you haven't, follow these instructions:

  • Imaging that the Thunder Plains is separated into 3 areas: 1 is the south (entrance area), 2 is the Al Bhed shop, 3 is the north (with the save point)
  • At section #1, search for 2 glowing cactuar stones. Pray at them (press SQUARE).
  • Head into area #2. There's a lot of cactuar stones there. Only pray at one of them, and only when it's glowing.
  • After you've prayed at at least three different statues, go back to area #1.
  • If you look closely, you'll see a Cactuar following you. It's hard to see at first, but it's there.
  • Now go to the spot marked on the map below with an X, and walk up to the tower.

    Thunder Plains Cactuar Quest

  • Pray there, and you'll get a treasure chest. You can only open this chest after you have the Celestial Mirror. Inside is the Ultimate Weapon for Kimahri.
Once you've finished the event, head towards area #3 and the save point. Walk around the Cactuar stone nearby, and you should find your Quactar.
