There is a reason why FFVII is seen as one of the most re-playable games of all time and that reason can be summarized in just one, hyphenated word: Side-Quest. There is a huge array of side-quests. Some will be almost vital to you, whereas others will make you want to top yourself.

Getting back into Midgar: Sector 5

This can only be done in discs 2 and 3. Head into Midgar and talk to the bloke outside, who'll whine that he may have dropped his key on an excavation tour. Ahha! Bone Village. Head there. Take to the bloke by the main building and ask to excavate either good treasure or normal treasure. You could do the rest on your own, but I'm going to be nice and tell you exactly where it is: on the top level of the screen near the bone skull where one of the excavators was is a bit of metal sticking out a bit - position yourself underneath it and then press the square button to confirm it. You should get the key after the first or few times.

With the key you can go back into Midgar and find a couple of things - but there's nothing interesting side-quest wise to be honest...Unless you count going into the Sector 5 church to see a ghost of Aeris as a side-quest. Hey it's up to you.

Turtle's Paradise flyers:

Another pain in the back-side and it's not really worth it - but it's something to do nonetheless. I'll just give the locations - it's easier:

#1: Sector 5 'main screen' (with most of the houses): Southwest building 2nd floor - examine the wall with a lot of posters.
#2: Shinra HQ 1st floor: Near the elevators there is a board with a few papers.
#3: Gold Saucer: Ghost Square - read the 'SHOP' sign near the shop entrance
#4: Cosmo Canyon: Examine one of the wood posts in the Tiger-Lilly arms shop
#5: Cosmo Canyon: Second floor of the inn - it's on a gold post.
#6: Wutai: Bottom floor of Yuffie's house - wall-scroll on the right hand side of the door. Only available during the Yuffie meets Don Corneo quest mentioned earlier.

You don't have to find the flyers in order, which is good, but once you have them all - go into the South-west building in Wutai - talk to the bar tender and he'll give you one of each of the sources (Power...Mind...Magic...Guard...Luck...Speed) and a mega elixir. Woo.

Ancient Forest:

Located right next to Cosmo Canyon (it's the weird rock-type thing you can see on a mountain next to it) you'll need to have either beaten Ultima Weapon completely - creating a crater, or you'll need a Green/Black/Gold chocobo to get there. Here you'll have the chance to gain a few flashy items and weapons. Read on...

Ok on the first screen you'll notice there are frogs and some smaller things bouncing around. If you press the action button next to one of them for the first time - you'll get a dialogue box telling you what to do, which sounds simple enough. Anyway - firstly run up a bit and grab the first small thing, put it at the bottom of the slope leading to the three sacks. Repeat this with the other two small things. After this, take one of the small insects and put it into the first sack - closing it, run back and do the same with the other two insects until all sacks are closed - meaning you can go over to the other side. Go and keep running to the right and jump on whatever the hell the dangly thing is and then exit the screen from the right.

The second screen is where it starts to get a little harder. Pick up one of the insects and then jump up using the dangly thing. Walk to the right until you hear a croaking noise and drop the insect. It'll be replaced by a frog. Take it and jump back down and then take the other insect, jump up and put it into the sack before quickly jumping back down, grabbing the frog, jumping up and jumping across the closed sacks and the...thing. You'll see a yellow materia here, but don't go and grab it just yet - unless you want to be chomped. Firstly, run up the slope and put the frog into the sack on the left, jump onto it and then wait, when it reopens you'll be catapulted onto a ledge with a bee's nest. Grab it and jump back down so you can throw it at the chompy thing and get your new spiffy slash-all materia. Run back to the right, grab the frog and then back up the slope - this time putting it into the sack on the right. Stand on it and wait again and you'll be launched over the other chompy thing so you can finish the screen.

3rd screen starts easily. Grab the two insects and put them into the sacks at the start. Leap over them and use the dangly thing to leap up elsewhere. To get the item you saw on the tree towards the end of the 2nd screen, run to the left and down the tree - however this means you repeating the last step of that screen and the first of the 3rd screen to get up-to-date. Do so and return to the screen above the 3rd. Run up to the higher branches and run to the right. Run across the branch sticking out and use the three dangly things to jump to the other side. Pick up whatever you want from here and then jump back. This time, take the path going down behind the path you just took - use the select button if you need a bit of help finding it.

This next step requires a bit of speed, but you should be ok. Grab an insect and put it into the sack - jump up and grab the nest. Throw it into the chompy thing and come forward to get the other insect. Put it into the sack on the left and jump to the other side. Quickly find another insect and go to the hole in the tree - replacing the insect with a frog. Finally run over back to the other side before the sack re-opens and use the frog on the sack on the right. Stand on it and then wait before being taken to a cave. Inside you'll find some really neat stuff, the most notable being Cloud's Apocalypse sword with a triple materia growth. At the back of the cave you'll see and exit. Well done - you've finished one of the more difficult side-quests!

Master Materia

Ok. There are two ways of doing this. The hard way...And the even harder way. Both take one hell of a lot of time, but it's worth it. The harder way is by beating Emerald Weapon - covered in another section. This way requires the W-Item materia and patience...Lots of it. Oh, you'll need to have recovered all four of the huge materias. So I'll go into those first.

Huge Materia 1: Fort Condor - Whether you win or lose the big battle, once the Phoenix event has happened, go talk to the old man sat by the table. After a conversation with him he'll give you the item.
Huge Materia 2: North Corel - Make sure you stop the train careering through Corel and you'll receive this item
Huge Materia 3: Shinra submarine. Make sure the submarine mission is successful and then search the ocean for the sub. There'll be a cut-scene and you'll then get the item.
Huge Materia 4: Rocket in space - during this episode, go to the room where the huge materia is held - it'll be in a cage. Cid will go on about there being some kind of password (Which is Circle Square Cross Cross by the way). Enter it and get the materia and then go on as normal.

Once you have all the materia, go into Cosmo Canyon and pay a visit to Bugenhagen's observatory - the rest of that bit is easy.

Now we get onto the meaty bits. Firsty I advise you to have Cloud and Cid in your party as they have weapons with triple growth, which you'll definitely need, plus someone who has a weapon with double materia growth (like Barret's Drill Arm or something). Also - it's handy to have several Rune Armlets purchased from Bone Villiage as they have double materia growth as well.

With all this, head up to the Northern Crater. Proceed down the first few paths as normal. In the first split, head downwards. On the second split, head down the door on the top (not the one you just came through though!). You'll come into a watery screen. Equip the armlets and triple/double growth weapons on your party and put each magic materia into each slot - I recommend putting Ultima, Full Cure and Shield into Cloud's Apocalypse sword and any other high level materia into Cid's Scimitar. Then simply run around and into a random battle...Ahhhh you'll get this a lot. If it's a Tonberry, Allemagne or Christopher/Ghighee then either run or fight - either way they're not very important. Magic pots and Movers on the other hand are the enemies you want. Movers are simple - just smack them. Magic Pot need to be fed an Elixir before you can damage them - and as you'll be fighting a lot of these things, it's handy to have W-Item somewhere so you can use 'the trick' (Circle cross circle...) to restore your supply. Basically you keep going with almost every single bit of materia you have...Told you you need patience...

Anyway, after you have all the materia of that colour group mastered, go back to Cosmo Canyon and into the observatory. Switch it on and go talk to the materia corresponding to the materia group you've mastered. If you have got all the materia required, then you'll be asked whether you want to perform the blend. Select yes and wait for a few moments and there you have it! It's just a matter of time, really.

Anyway, here's a list of what materia you need to make all four master materias:

Ultima
Full Cure
Shield
Restore
