FF13 pictured on PS2
February 1, 2010
Square Enix have given fans a rare glimpse into their development process for Final Fantasy XIII by printing screenshots of the work done on the game on PS2 in their newly released Ultimania books.
The screenshots show off a couple of different art styles - a realistic one and surprisingly a cell-shaded one. The screens show heavily-edited models of Yuna and Rikku used in place of characters - at this stage Lightning and company didn't exist!
It's clear from some screens that the overall shape of the battle system was in place from early on, though. We can see a similar font and design style in the battle screens, for example.
In a recent interview Producer Yoshinori Kitase explained that the game was originally meant to be a PS2 title, and the release of the PS3 delayed development significantly.
Kitase told a European Playstation magazine that the switch
"cost us about one and a half years and was constantly a case of trial and error."
Hopefully this means FF15 will be faster in appearing.
