Final Fantasy 9 » Ending Script

The ending of the game "officially" begins when you beat Necron, so we'll start from there. All text and movements will be written identical to the way our Game Script is written out.

Necron
"Why defy your fate?"
[ Teleporting magic comes down and carries the party away. ]
"Is the will to live that powerful...?"
[ Necron and his surroundings slowly explode and implode at the same time. ]
"This is not the end."
"I am eternal..."
"...as long as their is life and death..."

[ Necron disappears, as well as Memoria. As the roots of the Iifa tree start going wild (FMV), Zidane and the gang are teleported just outside of the great Tree. ]

Zidane
"Are you alright?"

Dagger
"Yeah...but look at what's happening."

Zidane
"So, what Kuja said was true...The Iifa Tree is beginning its violent reaction."

Dagger
"What's gonna happen?"

Zidane
"I don't know, but it doesn't look good..."

[ Fade to black. Fade in on Red Rose. Beatrix, Mikoto and two Pluto Knights are surveying the area on the terrace of the airship. ]

Beatrix
"...I doubt anyone could've survived that explosion..."

Pluto Knight
"Nooo..."

Other Pluto Knight
"Captain..."

Mikoto
"...They are still alive."

Beatrix
"What!? Where are they?"

Mikoto
"...Over there."
[ She points. ]

Beatrix
"The Hilda Garde is probably closer..."
[ She turns to one of the Pluto Knights. ]
"You. The tall one."

Haagen, Pluto Knight VIII
"Sir! Haagen, Pluto Knight VII, ma'am!"

Beatrix
"I didn't ask for your name. Contact the Hilda Garde right away."

Haagen, Pluto Knight VIII
"Yes, sir, ma'am, sir!"

[ Fade to black. Fade in on Hilda Garde 3, where Regent Cid is looking through a telescope(?) in hopes of finding the party. ]

Regent Cid
"Please be alive..."

Erin
"Sire! We're receiving a transmission from the Red Rose!"

Regent Cid
"Punch it up on the main line!"

[ Erin does as told. ]

"This is the Red Rose."

Regent Cid
"You're not General Beatrix. Who are you?"

Mikoto
"My name is Mikoto."
"Everyone is alive. You are very close to them."

Regent Cid
"What!!!? How do you know?"

Mikoto
"I can hear him..."

Regent Cid
"Who?"
[ No response. Cid turns to his two-man crew. ]
"Prepare to land immediately!"

[ FMV: The skies are blood-red as the Hilda Garde 3 floats down towards the Iifa Tree to pick up the gang. When it lands, all 8 party members look up with surprise. ]

Zidane
"That's the Hilda Garde 3..."
"Looks like Cid came to rescue us."
[ Regent Cid walks on deck. ]
"Cid!"

Regent Cid
"Thank heavens, you're all safe!"
"Come quickly! We don't have much time!"

[ The party, one by one, start walking onto the monstrous airship. Just before Zidane starts walking towards it, however, a voice beckons to him. Zidane stops, and so does Dagger. ]

"...Farewell, Zidane..."

Zidane
"Ah, dammit..."

Dagger
"What's wrong?"

Zidane
"...Why don't you go on ahead? I'll catch up with you all later."
"I have to take care of something..."

Dagger
"What...!?"

Zidane
"...He's still alive."

Dagger
"He can't be."

[ The rest of the party comes back on screen. ]

Steiner
"Zidane! What are you doing!?"

Zidane
"Steiner...take care of Dagger"

Steiner
"What!? Wh-What do you mean by that!?"

Zidane
"...Kuja's still alive. I can't just leave him."

Steiner
"This is ludicrous. Just because you two are from the same planet doesn't mean--"

Zidane
"No, that's not the reason."

Eiko
"Come on Zidane!"
"Why are you doing this!?"

Zidane
"Because..."
"Because I might've done the same thing if I were in his shoes."
"I probably would've fought against you guys and wreaked havoc in Gaia like he did..."
"I know it sounds crazy..."
"...but I know, deep down inside, I have to do this."

Quina
"You not crazy, Zidane."
"But you go help Kuja not good idea. Is too dangerous."

Zidane
"...I can't just leave him. There's no way I could live with myself."
"I'm going."

Steiner
"You're making a big mistake!"

Zidane
"Maybe...but we all have to make big decisions in life sometimes."
"For me, now's that time."
"I have to face up to it, just like Vivi did when he confronted his fears to find out about himself."
"That was a big decision for Vivi."

Vivi
"I don't know about that...I don't think it was really a big deal."

Zidane
"That's what you think, but I might not be doing this if it weren't for you."
"You've definitely taught me to take life more seriously."

Freya
"Well, you're obviously not going to change your mind, so I'm coming with you."

Steiner
"The principle of knighthood requires that one assist his comrade in times of need. I shall accompany you as well!"

Zidane
"Whoa, wait a minute."
"Like I said, it's my moment, so don't butt in. You guys'll have your own someday."
"Besides, you guys have more important things to worry about, like Burmecia and Alexandria."

Freya
"For once in your life, why can't you be honest!?"

Zidane
"Sorry, but I can't--"

Amarant
"I can't just walk away. It goes against my nature."

Zidane
"!?"

Amarant
"You're a real simpleton."
[ Regent Cid walks onto the deck. ]
"Forget it, guys. There's no stopping this fool."

Regent Cid
"What are you still doing out here!? Get onboard right now!"

Amarant
"Come on. Let's just leave him and get outta here."
[ Amarant runs off screen. ]

Zidane
"...That guy will never change."
"Alright, you heard the man! Get out of here before it's too late!"

Eiko
"Zidane, I love you! You'd better come back!!!"
[ Eiko runs off screen. ]

Quina
"Zidane, I need eat more different food."
"I still hungry!!! You need come back, take me more places, show me more food!"
[ Quina runs off screen. ]

Freya
"I still can't believe you're doing this. You've changed, Zidane."
"'Til we meet again."
[ Freya runs off screen. ]

Vivi
"Zidane, you've taught me another big lesson in life. Thanks..."
[ Vivi runs off screen. ]

Dagger
"Zidane..."

Steiner
"Princess... We must go."

Dagger
"......"

Zidane
"Dagger--I mean, Your Highness."
[ Zidane gets on one knee and bows. Cue music. ]
"The abduction is over. I can't take you any further."
"...I'm sorry for being so selfish."

[ Dagger walks towards Zidane; Steiner steps away and leaves them to a private chat. ]

Dagger
"No...You're not being selfish."
"...You've done so much for us."
"If it weren't for you, I probably would've led a meaningless life."
"With you, I was able to see so much of the world and meet so many people."
"We faced many hardships, too...but...I think I finally know what's important."
"I'm so fortunate to have met you. I'll never forget our trip together."
"Thank you, Zidane." [ She bows. ]
"......"
"......"
"Promise me one thing...Please come back."

[ FMV: The Airship takes off and Zidane and Dagger take one last look at each other. Dagger has tears in her eyes as she says goodbye for what seems like the last time to the one she loves. Zidane looks up proudly at the airship as it takes off, then turns around and walks a few steps. ]

[ The scene picks back up where Zidane and Dagger teleported to immediately after the Necron fight. ]

Zidane
"Kuja! Can you hear me!? I'm coming to get you!"

("You still have time...Forget about me and go.")

Zidane
"Just shut up and stay where you are!"

("...I don't understand you.")

Zidane
"Okay, here goes nothing."

[ FMV...ish...thing: The Iifa roots are still going wild and start to attack Zidane's rock. While Zidane surveys his surrounding area, an enormous amount of roots jut out of the ground behind him forcing him to jump. He runs through the chaos and down a root, only to find himself surrounded on both sides by even more roots. However, when the debris clears it turns out a root is carrying him! The root hits the ground and he starts running, and eventually jumps into a giant hole in the side of the tree. When Zidane reaches the platform Kuja is on, the camera pans to create a matrix-esque effect, after which Zidane falls down and makes a large cloud of dust. ]

Zidane
"U...Ugh..."
"...?"
[ He gets up. ]
"Phew...Still alive..."
"I guess that was pretty crazy."

[ Zidane looks runs up the roots to the platform Kuja lies on. ]

Zidane
"Hey! Are you alright?"

Kuja
"Zidane...?"
"What are you doing here? I thought I told you to go..."

Zidane
"Wouldn't you do the same for me if you knew I was dying?"

Kuja
"......"

Zidane
"......Never mind."

Kuja
"Your comrades were able to escape?"

Zidane
"Yeah... I knew you had something to do with it."

Kuja
"...I'm glad they made it."

Zidane
"Yeah, well...it's our turn to get movin'."

Kuja
"......"
"...I don't deserve to live after all that I've done."
"I'm useless to this world."

Zidane
"No one's useless..."
"You helped us escape, remember?"

Kuja
"......"
"After you guys beat me, I had nothing left...nothing more to lose."
"Then, I finally realized what it means to live..."
"I guess I was too late."
[ He dies. ]

Zidane
"!!!?"
"Hey! Don't you go dying on me, alright!?"
[ A crashing sound is heard. ]
"!!!?"

[ FMV: The roots enter the Iifa tree and head directly for Kuja's central platform. Just when they're about to hit, Zidane covers Kuja's montionless body with his own. The screen fades to black, and a loud crashing sound is heard. ]

[ The screen fades back into one of the now-idle far roots of the Iifa Tree that you walked down earlier in-game. All is silent except for a faint wind-noise, and the screen is tinted orange-red. As the dialogue continues, Mikoto is seen walking up the root and the camera slowly pans up to the Iifa tree. ]

"Kuja..."
"What you did was wrong..."
"But you gave us all one thing..."
"Hope..."
"We were all created for the wrong reason, but you alone defied our fate."
"We do not want to forget this."
"We want your memory to live on forever..."
"...to remind us that we were not created for the wrong reason--that our life has meaning."

[ Screen fades to black. ]

"Some time later..."

[ Music starts as the scene fades back to black then into the now-rebuilt Alexandria. Vivi walks on screen with a number of tickets. ]

Vivi
"So, this is Alexandria..."

[ Puck runs up from behind and crashes into Vivi, causing both of them to fall and the tickets to go flying. ]

Puck
"Pick up the pace, will ya!?"
"I don't believe it! Vivi!"

Vivi
"Vivi?"
"How do you know that name!?"

Puck
"What are you talking about?"
"It's me, Puck! How could you forget me!?"

Vivi
"Puck...?"

Puck
"You know, Puck!"

Vivi
"The-The Prince of Bumecia!?"

Puck
"Oh, come on! What's wrong with you?"
"If you're not Vivi, then who are you!?"

Vivi's Son
"I'm..."
"Vivi's son!"

[ Six more Vivis walk on-screen. Puck falls backwards. ]

Puck
"Yeeeeow!"
"Look at all the Vivis!"

[ Puck runs off screen, followed closely by the other Vivis. Fade to black. ]

"I always talked about you, Zidane. How you were a very special person to us, because you taught us all how important life is."

[ Fade to black, then to Burmecia. Freya and Sir Fratley jump into frame. ]

Sir Fratley
"Freya, you're leaving soon, are you not?"

Freya
"Yes. I can hardly wait to see everyone."

Sir Fratley
"Alexandria...I went there many years ago."

[ They sit on the fountain. ]

Freya
"How long will it take to rebuild Burmecia...?"

Sir Fratley
"I don't care, as long as I am with you."
"...I love you, Freya."
[ Fratley puts his arm around Freya and pulls her onto his shoulder. ]

Freya
"(...Yet he stilll doesn't remember our past.)"
"I just want to cherish our time right now."

[ Fade to black. ]

"You taught me that life doesn't last forever. That's why we have to help each other and live life to the fullest."

[ Fade to black, then to Dagger's bedroom in Alexandria Castle. Beatrix walks in. ]

Beatrix
"It's time to say goodbye to this room..."
[ She walks to the table and lifts her sword. ]
"Save the Queen, you have served me well..."
[ She places her sword on the table. ]
"My duty is finished here."
"Farewell, Alexandria..."

[ Beatrix walks out of the room. Fade to black. ]

"Even if you say goodbye, you'll always be in our hearts. So, I know we're not alone anymore."

[ Fade to black, then to the broken bridge near Treno South Gate. Amarant walks on screen and across the bridge, then waves to someone off screen. ]

Amarant
"...Hey."

[ Lani runs on screen. Amarant stops in front of her. ]

Lani
"Why are you going to Alexandria?"

Amarant
"You're not going?"
[ He starts walking off screen. ]

Lani
"I-I never said that!"
"H-Hey, wait!"

[ She follows Amarant. Fade to black. ]

"Why I was born... How I wanted to live... Thanks for giving me time to think."

[ Fade to black, then to Alexandria Castle kitchen, where Quina is examining the food. ]

Quina
"Good food not only delicious!"
"Good food made with heart!"
"This very important when cooking for friends."

[ Fade to black. ]

"To keep doing what you set your heart on...It's a very hard thingto do. We were all so courageous..."

[ Fade to black, then to Lindblum Grand Castle's elevator. Eiko is jumping around, and Regent Cid and Lady Hilda stand around her. ]

Eiko
"Hurry! Hurry!"
"We gotta get there before the play begins!"

Regent Cid
"Ha ha... There's no need to hurry."
"The theater ship is no match for my new ship."
"My new Hilda Garde is the fastest ship ever!"

Eiko
"Do I have to remind you?"
"You said the same thing about the theater ship!"
"...Ahem!"
"That's what you said, Father!"

Regent Cid
"Eiko... What did you just call me?"

[ The elevator stops and Eiko runs off. ]

Lady Hilda
"Darling, she called you 'Father'..."

[ Eiko runs back in. ]

Eiko
"Father! Mother! Hurry!"

[ She runs off screen again. ]

Regent Cid
"S-Say it again, Eiko!"

[ Fade to black. ]

"What to do when I felt lonely... That was the only thing you couldn't teach me. But we need to figure out the answer for ourselves..."

[ Fade to black, then to the main entrance of Alexandria Castle. Beatrix is walking away from the castle. ]

Steiner
"Beatrix!"
"Where are you going?"

Beatrix
"Please don't ask. My mind is already set."

Steiner
"Wait! Listen to me!"

"I, uh..."
"I-I never wish to lose you again!!!"

Beatrix
"Steiner..."

Steiner
"Let us protect the queen together!"

[ Beatrix runs towards Steiner as the screen fades to black. ]

"I'm so happy I met everyone... I wish we could've gone on more adventures. But I guess we all have ot say goodbye someday."

[ Fade to black, then to the conference room inside the Prima Vista Theater Ship. Baku, Blank, Cinna, Marcus and Ruby enter and sit down. ]

Baku
"Alright, you scumbags! We're almost there!"

Blank
"Been a long time since we saw Alexandria."

Marcus
"Let's give 'em a show they won't forget!"

Ruby
"Yeehaw!"

Cinna
"Break a leg, people!"

[ Fade to black. ]

"Everyone... Thank you. Farewell."
"My memories will be part of the sky..."

[ Fade to black, then to the outdoor throne of Alexandria Castle. There sits Queen Garnet, dressed in a white gown awaiting the start of the play. Steiner and Beatrix enter and salute. ]

Dagger
"The theater ship will arrive any minute."
"It's been so long..."
"I can't wait to see everyone."
"But..."
"It'll never be the same..."
"I have to let go of the past..."
"I have to move on, just like he taught me."

[ The crowd starts to cheer and the screen fades to black, then back onto the stage of of the theater ship. Baku walks out in his King outfit, bows, and addresses the crowd. ]

Baku
"Ladies and Gentlemen!"
"Tonight's performance is a story that takes place long, long ago."
"Our heroine, Princess Cornelia, is torn from her lover, Marcus."
"She attempts to flee the castle, only to be captured by her father, King Leo."
"Tonight's story begins when Marcus and Cornelia decide to run away together."
"And now, Your Royal majesty, Queen Garnet, Lord Steiner, Lady Beatrix..."
"...noble ladies and lords, and our rooftop viewers, Tantalus proudly presents 'I Want to Be Your Canary'!"

[ The crowd claps as Baku bows again and walks off stage as the screen fades to black. The screen fades back in to Cornelia (Ruby) running across the top of the set. ]

Cornelia
"Marcus?"

[ She keeps running until she reaches the steps and runs down those too. At the bottom is Marcus, dressed in a full cloak, who walks towards Cornelia. ]

Cornelia
"Sweet Marcus, I fear I love thee more than I should!"

Marcus
"Princess... Wilt thou be happy, married to a lowly peasant such as I?"

Cornelia
"Prithee, call me 'princess' no more!"
"Marcus, wilt thou truly cherish me, the king's only daughter?"
"Or is such a desire too dear to wish for!?"
"After our nuptials, shall I become no more than a puppet?"
"A mindless puppet, never to laugh, never to cry?"
"I wish to live my life under the sky. At times I shall laugh, at other times cry."
"For no life is more insincere than that lived as a masquerade."

Marcus
"So much consideration thou hast given it! But worry not!"
"Cast away thy trappings of royalty, and I shall swaddle thee in a gown of pure love!"
"Never again will I part from thee!"
"Pray, my love, make me thy canary to keep forever in the cage of they bosom!"
"Let us embark on the first ship tomorrow, before dawn can tell of our elopement!"

Cornelia
"All my fortunes at thy foot, I lay, and I shall follow thee throughout the world!"

Marcus
"No cloud, no squall shall hinder us!"

[ Marcus turns and walks off the stage. ]

Cornelia
"O, love is the sweetest joy and the wildest woe."
"All I wish is to be by my sweet Marcus's side."

[ The camera moves to Blank, who is eavesdropping behind the steps. ]

Blank
"Fie! It shall be war against unless this marriage is stopped."
"Ne'er will I let their plan come to fruition."
[ He walks over to Cornelia. ]
"Good day to ye, Highness."

Cornelia
"Good day..."

Blank
"Wist thee of Marcus?"

Cornelia
"Marcus!? What news dost thou bring?"

Blank
"This!"
[ He walks over and punches Cornelia in the gut. ]

Cornelia
"Ugh!"

[ Cornelia falls into Blank's arms as the screen fades to black. ]

[ Fade in to stage at night time. King Leo walks in. ]

King Leo
"Where is she!? Where has mine only daughter gone!?"
[ Blank walks on stage. ]
"Blank, good man! Hast thou seen Cornelia?"

Blank
"Worry not, Majesty."
"I shall make sure Cornelia marries Prince Shneider. Be thou at ease."

King Leo
"At ease, sayest thou? How can I rest, not know she is safe?"
"Could it be...thou hast betrayed me?"

Blank
"By my troth, sir, I betrayed none other than poor Marcus!"

King Leo
"Thou had the gall to betray thy dearest friend."
"Wouldst thou not betray me as swiftly?"

Blank
"Stay thy hand, I merely..."

[ King Leo takes out his sword and strikes down Blank with it, then walks away. ]

Blank
"I merely sought a lasting peace between the two kingdoms!"

[ Benero and Zenero enter. ]

Zenero
"The traitor is dead!"

Benero
"O, cruel fate!"

King Leo
"You two... Quickly, find Cornelia and bring her before me!"

Benero and Zenero
"Yes, Your Majesty."

[ They run off screen. ]

King Leo
"Wretched daughter! How dare she disobey her father's wishes!"

[ He walks off screen. Fade to black. ]

Marcus
"The time for our departure is long past."
"Where is Cornelia?"

[ Cinna enters. ]

Cinna
"Marcus, the ship soon embarks!"
"Board ye this boat alone, and peace could come to both kingdoms, as Blank so said."
"Speak, Marcus!"

Marcus
"She told me that she could not live without me."

[ Marcus turns and walks towards the set, as the sky brightens and birds "fill the air". ]

Marcus
"So, the sun is our enemy, too. The eastern sky grows bright."
"We will not spread our wings, as yonder birds in joyous flight?"

Cinna
"Hark Marcus! They cannot wait any longer!"
"The Ship departs!"
[ He runs off stage. ]

Marcus
"Could she have betrayed me?"
[ He walks towards the center of the stage. ]
"Nay, ne'er would my love speak false."
"I must have faith!"
"She shall appear if I only believe!"
"As the sun lends me no ear, I pray instead to the twin moons!"
[ He turns towards the twin moons and raises both his arms. ]
"I beseech thee, wondrous moonlight, grant me my only wish!"

[ Marcus reaches for the brooch of his cloak, then turns towards the royal seating and throws the cloak off. Underneath, instead of Marcus, is Zidane! ]

Zidane
"Bring my beloved Dagger to me!"

[ FMV: Dagger gets up from the throne and rushes towards the main doors to the castle, only to be blocked by Steiner and Beatrix. The two of them open the doors for the queen, who then rushes out into the crowd. Along the way, she loses her royal pendant, and willingly removes her crown right before jumping into Zidane's arms on stage. The crowd goes wild as Steiner and Beatrix hold up the Save the Queen to create a "spotlight" of sorts on the two lovers. Fade to black. ]

"How did you survive...?"
"I didn't have a choice."
"I had to live."
"I wanted to come home to you."
"So..."
"I sang your song."
"Our song."

[ FMV: The camera dissolves into a panoramic view of Alexandria just before the credits start to roll. As the credits are rolling, many of the FMVs from in-game are shown. At the end of the credits, a red and a blue moon are seen "merging". The merge becomes a blinding light which then fades to show the Crystal, symbol of Final Fantasy IX. ]
